Within the framework of the Web of Science database, each researcher is assigned a unique identifier - Researcher ID, in the form of a combination of 11 symbols, letters and numbers. It is worth mentioning that the practice of using this kind of notation is quite common in the world of scientometrics. For example, in Scopus, each profile of a scientist has a unique notation in the form of Scopus ID. We have already told about its specifics earlier. Today, we will talk about the features of Researcher ID, how to register in the system and how to find out your identifier number.
How to register in a Researcher ID?
Web of Science is a global database and one of the most influential aggregators of scientific literature, it is connected with many platforms and Publons is one of them. This is where the information about the Researcher ID is contained. It is worth noting that after the last update of Web of Science, an integrated free platform with a wide range of functions is available to the user, namely the My Web of Science portal.
To obtain a unique identifier, it is necessary to register in the system. This process does not take much time and is absolutely free (it is worth noting that the subscription version provides more features). Follow all these steps and login to your profile.
The system will automatically pull up all the publications of author in the Web of Science Core Collection if they are available, and if the author's name is specified correctly.
Researcher ID: where to look?
To find out the Researcher ID, go to the tab My Web of Science "My researcher profile". It will display information about the main scientometric indicators and research activities of the author.
Please note that you can get a Researcher ID even without publications in Web of Science Core Collection journals, unlike the Scopus ID.
Publications and Researcher ID: how to find?
It is worth noting that sometimes there are situations when publications are not automatically integrated from Web of Science. This may be due to (in-)correctness of filling in the data about the author, different transliteration options for the first and last name, or differences in contact information.
In any case, the data about missing publications can easily be added to the author profile of Web of Science. How to do it?
- Go to the tab "My records", and then to the section "Publications".
- Choose the function «Add publications».
- Add publication using one of the suggested methods.
You can add publication data in one of several ways:
- Enter information about the e-mail that was used as a contact when publishing scientific articles.
- Add publication data via identifier (DOI, Web of Science accession number, PubMed ID, arXiv ID).
- Download the file with a scientific article.
- Link the Web of Science author’s profile to ORCID.
Researcher ID contributes to the solution of several tasks at once, and the main tasks is the identification of authors with similar surnames, especially if the affiliation organization and/or country are the same. It is also worth noting that Researcher ID data can be integrated with EndNote – a bibliographic manager that is a product of Clarivate.
The correct design of the author's profile in Web of Science also helps to increase the author's visibility among the global scientific community, his rating and authority.
