Obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Doctor of the Profile is one of the main scientific goals of the scientists from Kazakhstan. For its implementation, it is required a certain number of publications in media outlets that are indexed in Scopus or Web of Science. The specialists of the company "Scientific Publications" often receive the requests concerning the support of scientific article in order to fulfill the regulatory requirements for obtaining an academic degree.
How many years does it take to train in the doctoral studies in Kazakhstan?
Education in doctoral studies and the award of a scientific degree is the third stage in the system of higher education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, after the bachelor's and master's degrees.
The training lasts 3 years, after which the applicant should defend a dissertation.
The system of higher education in Kazakhstan is guided by a three-level system, which corresponds to the Bologna process. In some countries of the world, there is a four-level system. In addition, the following scientific degrees are separately distinguished: the Dr. habil - Habilitated Doctor, the MD - Doctor of Medicine, ThD - Doctor of Theology and more.
Given the differences in the rules for awarding the academic degrees, there is a problem of nostrification – the correct equating of education documents in other countries of the world.
What is the difference between an academic degree and an academic title?
Academic degrees are more a research achievement, while academic titles – a teaching achievement.
Academic titles: associate professor (docent), professor.
Scientific degrees in Kazakhstan: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of the Profile.
Requirements for publications of the doctoral candidates in the RK (Republic of Kazakhstan)
To obtain a certain academic degree, it is necessary to successfully defend a dissertation. At the legislative level of the Republic of Kazakhstan, it is outlined the basic requirements for the quality of research material, its uniqueness and the principles that each researcher must adhere to in order to avoid violations of the rules of academic integrity. The dissertation is submitted in the following form:
- dissertation research, which is a voluminous and thorough work with the results of the author's scientific activity.
- two published scientific articles and one review published in Web of Science journals. It is important to consider the requirements for publications: not less than Q1-Q2*. If publications are written in co-authorship, this type of reporting on dissertation research is counted only if the scientist is the first author in one of the publications.
*hereinafter, in the context of scientometric indicators, percentiles of the Scopus database according to CiteScore of the Elsevier company and quartiles (Q) of the Web of Science database according to Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate) are taken into account.
If there is a dissertation work, it is necessary to fulfill the regulatory requirements for the number of published scientific articles that reflect the main results of the work. Attention should be paid to the research areas:
- For directions 8D05-8D11, scientometric indicators by quartile or percentile are taken into account.
- For other areas and disciplines, it is needed to pay attention to the indicators of percentile or impact-factor and citation indexes in the Web of Science Core Collection: Arts and Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index.
Since 2020, the regulatory requirement for the number of published articles has been changed. At the legislative level, emphasis is placed on the quality and scientometric indicators of publications, in which the works are published, rather than on their quantity. There are different options to fulfill the regulatory requirements for the award of academic degrees:
- Availability of 3 published works in journals from the “ministerial list”, the list of recommended MES of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Committee for Quality Assurance in the Sphere of Education and Science (CQASES) + 1 published article in a publication with scientometric indicators: not lower than 25 percentile or Q1-Q4.
- Publication of two scientific articles in journals that are indexed in international databases: the first one with publication indicators of at least 25 percentile or Q1-Q4, the second one – not less than 50 percentile or Q1-Q3. In this case, the additional articles of the CQASES are not required.
- One published article in a publication with indicator Q1.
Which variant is the most optimal?
Each researcher chooses on his own which option to fulfill the necessary legislative requirements is the most optimal for him.
For many years of experience of work with clients from the Republic of Kazakhstan, the company "Scientific Publications" has determined that the scheme of publication activity is the most popular, in which a scientist needs to publish 2 works:
- One article in Scopus journals with a percentile not less than 25 according to CiteScore.
- One article in Scopus journals with a percentile not less than 50 according to CiteScore.
It should be noted that this is far from the only option for possible cooperation with the Scientific Publications company. For more than 6 years of work in the scientific consulting market, we have implemented hundreds of publication projects of any level of complexity, including articles in journals with the highest quartile and percentile.
