At the same time, a master’s programme involves the completion of at least 60–120 academic credits, while doctoral studies require at least 180 academic credits, which in itself demonstrates the difference in the scale of preparation.
What is a master’s dissertation?
A master’s dissertation is the final work of a student enrolled in a scientific and pedagogical master’s programme. In regulatory terms, it is defined as an independent academic study containing theoretical and practical developments relating to a relevant issue within the chosen topic. As a result, such work is expected to be more than a summary of the literature or any other material; it must be a full-fledged research study.
Such work typically includes:
- Formulation of the problem
- Analysis of sources
- Selection of methodology
- Interpretation of results
- Reasoned conclusions

How does a master’s project differ from a master’s dissertation?
A master’s project is a separate format of final work for a specialised master’s programme. It is an independent study containing theoretical and/or experimental results that make it possible to solve an applied task relating to a relevant issue within the educational programme.
In other words, the key difference here lies in its orientation towards a practical outcome. If a master’s dissertation is built around an academic problem and a research contribution, a master’s project is more often aimed at an applied solution, model, management tool, technological proposal, or another practice-oriented result. These two formats are similar in their research nature, but differ in their academic purpose.
What is considered a doctoral dissertation?
A doctoral dissertation is a higher-level piece of work. Under the current regulations, it is defined as an independent study in which either theoretical provisions have been developed that constitute a new academic achievement, or a scientific problem has been solved, or scientifically grounded technical, economic, or technological solutions have been proposed. Such work is prepared within doctoral studies and is linked to the award of a PhD degree or a professional doctorate.
In what form can a doctoral dissertation be presented?
In Kazakhstan, a doctoral dissertation may be presented not only in the form of a traditional dissertation. The current rules permit two formats: the dissertation itself and a series of academic publications.
In addition, the SES (State Compulsory Education Standard) states that final attestation in doctoral studies is carried out in the form of a dissertation or a series of articles, the requirements for which are determined by the Rules for Awarding Degrees.
What are the main requirements for a doctoral dissertation?
For a doctoral dissertation, what matters is not only the content of the research itself, but also compliance with the formal requirements for admission to the defence. In Kazakhstan, doctoral dissertations are defended before dissertation councils established in accordance with the prescribed rules. The publication requirements for admission to the defence are determined by the Rules for Awarding Degrees.
One of the basic criteria is the presence of at least one article or review in an international peer-reviewed journal with an impact factor or with a CiteScore percentile of no lower than 25 in Scopus, as well as articles in journals included in the official List of Publications, in a quantity that depends on the category of the journal.
How do PhD dissertations differ from professional doctorates?
Here, the difference is primarily related to the orientation of the training itself:
- The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is awarded to individuals who have completed a doctoral programme in the scientific and pedagogical field.
- A professional doctorate is awarded to individuals who have completed doctoral studies in the relevant sphere of professional activity.
Accordingly, the PhD is more often associated with a stronger academic and research orientation, whereas the professional doctorate is focused on the professional sphere and applied outcomes.
Thus, the types of dissertation in Kazakhstan differ, and each type of work has its own role. A master’s dissertation is associated with a scientific and pedagogical master’s programme and is oriented towards academic research. A master’s project belongs to a specialised master’s programme and places emphasis on an applied solution. A doctoral dissertation relates to doctoral studies, presupposes a higher level of academic novelty, and is subject to much stricter requirements regarding publications, the defence procedure, and the content of the research.
