In today's scientific world, high-quality publication activity is not only an indicator of a researcher's professionalism, but also one of the main criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of scientific activity. In this regard, the state, universities and scientific institutions of Kazakhstan actively encourage scientists to publish in the Scopus and Web of Science scientometric databases.

One of the main tools for encouraging publication activity in Kazakhstan is awards and financial rewards for scientific articles published in publications indexed in recognised international databases. Such incentives may be provided as part of state scientific programmes, grants or in accordance with the internal policies of individual universities.
Awards for scientific publications from Kazakh universities
Many leading higher education institutions in Kazakhstan have introduced their own systems for encouraging scientists through internal awards for publications. These universities include, in particular, Satbayev University, Al Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) and others.
For example, at KazNU, staff and academic and teaching staff who demonstrate high publication activity in publications indexed in the Scopus database are awarded one-off cash rewards. At the end of 2022, 129.1 million tenge was allocated for 537 published articles. In 2023, university scientists published 1,192 articles, of which 396 authors received awards. All these works were published in publications belonging to the first and second quartiles (Q1 and Q2) according to the international classification of scientific journals. The total amount of remuneration paid was 130,205,764 tenge.
The amount of monetary remuneration for scientific articles published in journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science databases is determined based on a number of criteria, including:
- the quartile of the scientific journal
- the percentile of the publication
- the rating of the scientific journal in SNIP and/or SJR
- the presence of the author's profile in ORCID
- the presence of published articles in the scientist's ORCID profile
- the use of self-citation within certain limits, etc.
It should be borne in mind that each university develops its own rules and criteria for awarding such prizes. Up-to-date information can be found on the official website of the relevant institution. If this is not available, it is worth contacting the administration directly for detailed information on the conditions for receiving rewards.
State awards for scientific articles and scientific work
In addition to the awards provided by higher education institutions and scientific institutions, Kazakhstan has a system of state rewards for significant achievements in scientific activity. In particular, this refers to publications in leading scientometric databases, active research work and significant contributions to the development of science. Among such awards are:
- The K.I. Satpayev bonus– for the best scientific research in the field of natural sciences.
- The Ch.Ch. Valikhanov bonus – for outstanding achievements in the humanities.
- The A.I. Baraev bonus (first, second, third) – for the best research in the field of agriculture.
- The I. Altinsarin bonus – for significant scientific results in the field of pedagogy.
- The Kyul-Tegin bonus – for contributions to the development of Turkology.
- The D.A. Kunaev bonus – for young scientists for research in the field of natural sciences.
- The M.O. Auezov bonus – for young scientists for work in the field of humanities.
In addition, 75 state scientific scholarships are awarded annually, 50 of which are specifically for gifted young scientists up to the age of 40.
These forms of state support are aimed at stimulating scientific development, recognising the achievements of researchers and enhancing the prestige of scientific work in Kazakhstan.
Additional incentives for publishing activity
In addition to direct awards, publishing scientific articles in high-ranking journals provides a number of important advantages:
- priority in the allocation of funding for scientific research
- improvement of the university's academic ranking, which in turn has a positive impact on the amount of funding and participation in international educational and scientific programmes
Awards for publications in prestigious scientific journals remain one of the most effective mechanisms for supporting the scientific sphere in Kazakhstan. They contribute to the growth of international recognition of Kazakhstani science, the formation of academic culture, and the active involvement of young researchers in scientific activities.
