Improving scientometric indicators is important but long-term work. At the present stage of the development of science and its popularisation, it is not enough just to write and publish the research. It is often necessary to take care of the marketing component, follow scientometric trends and the latest developments, and use them to fulfil one's scientific potential. One of the essential platforms for a modern scientist is ORCID.
The authors have their unique profiles in almost every scientometric database.
Why then register in ORCID?
Firstly, the resource provides an opportunity to solve the problem of identifying authors with the same last names and first names, especially when the country of affiliation or an institution is similar or the same. ORCID assigns authors a unique identifier, effectively encrypting data about the author in the form of 16 digits.
Secondly, the ORCID profile can be combined with the author's profile in international scientometric databases. Thus, the author's profile in ORCID is a unified identifier, which makes it easier to track and improve the main scientometric indicators since other scientists will be able to find and get acquainted with the full list of the author's scientific articles more easily.
The ORCID identifier is represented as a URL: http://orcid.org/xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. The author is assigned such a unique number in accordance with the ISO 27729:2012 «International identifier of standard names (ISNI)». The identifier can contain numbers from 1 to 9, as well as a capital X indicating the number 10. In addition to the hyperlink, the profile in ORCID is presented in the abbreviated form «ORCID: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx».
Ways to add publications to ORCID
The ORCID system offers various ways to add publications to the author's profile. In the most general sense, this can be done in three ways:
1. Link author profiles. ORCID allows finding publications and automatically adding them to the author's profile using the following platforms: Airiti, BASE - Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, Crossref Metadata Search, DOE/OSTI, DataCite, Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB), Europe PubMed Central, Hal ISNI, JaLC, MLA, International Bibliography, OpenAIRE Explore, Redalyc, Research Data Australia, The Lens, Scopus – Elsevier.
2. Add works using the DOI identifier, pubMed, or using the BibTex bibliographic manager.
3. Link manually. The information about the work (title, subtitle, publication date, link), its identifier, citation can be added for display manually in the ORCID profile.
How to link author profiles in Scopus and ORCID?
1. To link author pages in Scopus and ORCID, log in to the Scopus scientometric database and use the search box to find Your page. It will show the function «Link to ORCID».
2. After that, You need to log in to ORCID and provide information about the author and his publishing activities.
3. Make sure that the author's profile is correct or select the corresponding profile from the list.
4. Select the desired spelling options for first and last name.
5. The resource will automatically display works that belong or may potentially belong to the researcher. It is necessary to make sure that all the articles belong to the author. They can be deleted if necessary.
6. Confirm that the information in the Scopus profile is correct.
7. Enter the email address that the profile is registered for in ORCID.
8. Click on «Send my publication list». Messages from Scopus will be automatically sent to the ORCID profile.
