Every year, in May-July, a global update of the scientometric indicators of journals for the most influential databases is carried out. At the beginning of the month, a new calculation of SJR, SNIP, CiteScore indicators was presented in Scopus. For Web of Science publications, updated metrics are provided in Journal citation reports 2022.
Journal citation reports: key metrics
The most significant JCR metrics are:
- The quartile score is one of the most well-known metrics in the scientometrics. Q1 and Q2 journals are included in the list of the most rated and influential, Q3 is considered the "golden mean", Q4 are often publications that have recently been included in the database and have not yet gained much popularity.
- Citation rate – an indicator of the number of citations of a particular journal.
- Impact factor – a metric that evaluates the popularity of a journal based on the number of citations and publications.
- Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), a metric introduced last year to evaluate Web of Science journals. The calculation methodology resembles the Impact Factor, but additionally takes into account the normalised indicator by subject area.
Journal citation reports also take into account, as an additional metric, the percentage of articles published under the "golden" open access business model (percentageOAGold).
Journal citation reports is a separate product of Clarivate, which is updated annually for publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. JCR 2022 data is published based on 2021 journal performance.
CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians (Wiley Online Library) has the highest scoring according to Journal citation reports 2022:
- Included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)
- Quartile = 1 (Q1)
- Impact Factor – 286.13
- JCI – 76.09
