Web of Science is a global database where millions of scientific articles are indexed. Therefore, it is important to know how to work with such a massive information array when planning your research. Web of Science: how to find an article?
The Web of Science database offers massive opportunities for searching of scientific articles that allows tracking the material in which the user is interested in the most detailed way.
Please note that such type of search is only possible with the full subscription access.
The main page will display the tab “DOCUMENTS” and the required search fields for:
- Database (Web of Science Core Collection, Chinese Science Citation Database, Derwent Innovations Index, KCI-Korean Journal Database, MEDLINE, SciElo Citation Index): select all or some of them.
- Citation index.
- Required information about a scientific article: topic, article title, author, publication year, affiliation, grant support agency, .publisher, publication date, abstract, address, author identifier, keywords, document type, DOI, grant number, authors group, writing language, PubMed ID, Web of Science categories.
There are also functions:
- «Add row» - adding the required search field or its restriction (functions «and», «or» and «not»).
- «Add date range» - restriction on the publication period (all years, the last 5 years, etc.).
- «Search» - search.
The more specific the user’s request is, the more relevant materials will be displayed.
Web of Science: article search and additional filters
After entering a request and clicking on “Search”, the user will get to the results display page where additional filters for material ranking provided, for example:
- Quick filters: display only review articles «Review Article», early access materials «Early Access», open access «Open Access», most cited materials «Enriched Cited References».
- Select works by a specific author.
- Filter results by affiliation organization.
- Select materials of a certain knowledge category.

How to check the indexing of an article in the Web of Science?
The research article data page in the Web of Science displays information about the publication date and work indexing. To do this, select the material in which the user is interested from the list of found materials. Indexing information is located in the “Indexed” column.
If the user cannot find the work or there is a special kind of notes regarding the material, but the article data were entered correctly, the work is not indexed in the database.
Also on the document page there is a lot of other useful information for researchers:
- Information about the authors works with which they can be easily identified (full name, ORCID ID, Researcher ID)
- Information about where the work was published, DOI, and document type.
- Metadata (abstract, keywords).
- Authors’ information (affiliation, contacts).
- Knowledge category.
- Document information (writing language, ISSN, Accession Number).
- Data on material citation.
- Other information (IDS Number).
