How to prevent publication in a journal that may be excluded from Scopus?
Before submitting an article for consideration to the editorial board of a journal, it is important to carefully study its activities. An author should pay attention to several factors that may indicate a journal's potential exclusion from the Scopus database.
- Rapid acceptance of an article for publication
If the journal to which you submitted your manuscript responded suspiciously quickly, e.g., within 1-3 weeks, this may indicate an insufficient level of review of your work. Such promptness may be contrary to editorial policy and may result in the removal of the publication from the Scopus database.
It is important to remember that rapid review and peer review in databases such as Scopus is virtually impossible. This process usually takes from 2 to 6 months and depends on the journal's workload, its specificity, readiness of your material and other factors.
- Publication activity of the publication
Excessively high publication activity of a journal may indicate that the journal is not in good standing. Since publication in Scopus is paid and requires a publication fee from the author, some publications use this solely as a way to make money.
For example, if before indexing in the Scopus database a journal published 10 articles in one issue and was published twice a year, but after indexing it started to be published monthly and the number of articles in each issue doubled or tripled, this is an alarming signal.
Therefore, we recommend authors to research and analyse the publication activity and activity of the issue before and after indexing in the database. This will help to avoid mistakes and unsuccessful publications.
- Correspondence of the journal topics and articles
It is important to consider the subject matter of the journal, the main research areas that are published in the journal, and the relevance of the published material to these areas. In some cases, this aspect may be related to the previous one, as a journal that is solely profit-oriented may start publishing research that does not correspond to its stated topics and directions.
