History of the Day of Science Workers in Kazakhstan
Traditionally, the Day of Science Workers in Kazakhstan has been celebrated on 12 April since 2011. The date was not chosen by chance – it was the day when the first president of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, Kanish Imantayevich Satpayev, a prominent geologist, was born. He made a great deal of effort to develop science in the country: he helped to establish branches of the USSR Academy of Sciences and research institutes in Kazakhstan, which eventually led to the establishment of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.
Modern Science in Kazakhstan
The scientific sphere of the Republic of Kazakhstan demonstrates a steady development trend. Due to increased state support and funding for research, the number of scientific papers is growing, and international cooperation is intensifying, which is manifested in the implementation of joint projects, expansion of scientific and technical ties, introduction of modern peer review mechanisms, and better access to global information resources. In addition, there is an active involvement of higher education institutions in research.
In today's era of rapid technological progress, it is extremely important to focus on systemic research, deep knowledge acquisition and the development of science. Science is a guiding light for the nation, so the scientific community has a special mission and responsibility to society.
At the beginning of the period of independence, science in Kazakhstan did not receive adequate support, which forced many researchers to change their field of activity. As a result, the number of scientists in the country decreased by three times, which had a negative impact on the country's intellectual potential.
The government is implementing a number of practical measures to stimulate the development of the scientific sector. Three years ago, the modernisation of the Academy of Sciences was launched, and today it has been granted the status of a leading scientific institution. Significant attention is paid to upgrading the infrastructure and training scientific personnel. The Law “On Science and Technology Policy”, adopted in 2024, was a significant impetus for change. It contains provisions aimed at improving the science management system and ensuring social protection of scientists. This law is designed to guarantee the rights and interests of professionals working in the field of research.
In recent years, funding for scientific research in the country has increased by 3.5 times. Support for young researchers has been significantly strengthened: of the more than 25,000 scientists currently working in Kazakhstan, about half are young people under the age of 40. This indicates the formation of a new generation of scientists.
Over the five-year period, scientific institutions engaged in applied research and development received more than 40 billion tenge in revenue. More than KZT10 billion in taxes were paid to the state budget, and this trend is on the rise. In addition, private investment in the research sector has attracted 14.5 billion tenge, and more than 2,000 new jobs have been created. These results demonstrate the active participation of scientists in the development of the national economy.
How is the Day of Science Workers celebrated in Kazakhstan?
On the occasion of the celebration, on 12 April, solemn events are held to honour scientists. State awards and prizes are presented for significant achievements in the scientific field. Higher education institutions organise scientific and practical conferences where students and young researchers have the opportunity to present their scientific developments and innovative ideas.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On awarding state awards”, scientists are awarded high honours for significant achievements in the field of science, such as the “Парасат” and “Құрмет” orders, the medal “For Worthy Work”, and the honorary title “Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Kazakhstan”.
