Bibliographic managers are irreplaceable assistants for the modern researcher. Using them, researchers have the opportunity to substantially reduce the time to find the necessary sources and arrange them in accordance with the standards. One of the most famous and used reference managers is Mendeley.
This time, we propose to consider how to use the Mendeley platform, work with a list of saved sources, arrange a bibliography and even search for employment in the field of science from leading companies and research organisations in the world.
Library at Mendeley
To start working with the Mendeley platform, you need to register using the link.
Subsequently, users are shown a search box in the browser. For convenience, Mendeley can be downloaded to a PC or mobile device as an app.
It is effortless to find the necessary sources by keywords through the search box. Search results are displayed as individual articles, which can be sorted by year of publication, document type, journal title, author name, or type of access, and can be added to the library, viewed, or used to find related papers.
Saved documents are available on the Library tab. The library functions include viewing articles, sorting them, moving them to standard folders or creating new ones, as well as providing access to the metadata of each individual document.
Apart from adding articles based on search results, there are other ways to add to the library on the Mendeley platform:
- Drag and drop a file from your PC.
- Add document from other bibliographic managers (BibTex, EndNote).
- Enter publication data manually.
Download the web plug-in and replenish the library using Internet resources or materials from scientometric databases.
References layout
Referring to other authors' studies, it is necessary to correctly format the references and bibliography. For documents saved in Mendeley, this feature is provided automatically.
Download the Mendeley plugin to your PC. Thereafter, citations and references layout using Mendeley will be available in Microsoft documents on the References tab. Select the required material in the search, it will be automatically configured into a reference.
Upon creating a list of references, you can choose the style you want. Sometimes journals, often those indexed in Scopus, indicate the required style of presentation and even submit a reference to it through Mendeley.
Mendeley Platform and New Career Opportunities
Upon getting started with Mendeley, pay attention to your profile completion and its quality. With its help, you can more efficiently search for colleagues, communicate with them, use their studies as sources.
It is worth describing the Careers section of Mendeley in a little more detail. With its help, you can learn about the most relevant job offers in the field of science and find employees for a research organisation. Accordingly, there is a version for employers and jobseekers.
On the platform, you can create your own CV, view an employer profile or particular job offers. For employers, the functions of publishing new vacancies, viewing the corresponding resumes, and searching for them are provided. Currently, there are approximately 795 thousand vacancies in Mendeley's database. On this resource, applications for the search for employees are published by such scientific institutions and companies as the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Apple, etc.
The Scientific Publications company constantly monitors the relevant possibilities of the field of science and scientometrics. For example, Mendeley tools can save time searching for sources and laying out lists of references, as well as communicate more efficiently with colleagues and move up the career ladder.
