How do oil and gas companies support scientific research?
Today, many large oil and gas companies have their own scientific departments or collaborate with universities, where some of their specialists have academic affiliations. The results of such work are usually presented in the form of scientific publications. This not only demonstrates the competence of specialists, but also ensures the transparency and validity of their innovative solutions.
Not all companies have yet realised the importance of scientific publications as a tool for development and recognition. At the same time, leading companies actively promote their developments through publications, thereby improving their image and demonstrating technological leadership. In the modern context, it is not only production efficiency that matters, but also responsibility to society and the environment.

Academic cooperation
Interaction with universities and research institutes is actively encouraged:
- Joint research with higher education institutions improves the quality of publications
- The company can act as a partner in scientific programmes, ensuring the practical focus of research
- Internships and scientific exchanges broaden the scientific horizons of employees
Motivating employees to publish
Support for scientific articles is not only financial – companies also provide motivation:
- Bonuses and awards for publications in prestigious journals.
- Inclusion of publication activity in the employee performance evaluation system.
- Encouragement of career growth based on scientific activity.
- Recognition at corporate events, publications in corporate media and scientific journals.
Examples of how oil and gas companies invest in scientific research
SOCAR
One of the key areas of SOCAR's corporate social responsibility is supporting the development of science and education, as the progress of society largely depends on the level of investment in science and education. An example of such activity is the SOCAR Science Foundation, established on 26 May 2011 on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding between SOCAR and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
Between 2012 and 2021, 496 scientific projects were submitted to the fund within the framework of six competitive programmes, of which 154 received funding in the form of grants. The amount of financial support depends on the scale, complexity and duration of the project and can range from 50 to 200 thousand manats. The preliminary selection of projects is carried out by the ANAS competition commission, after which the final decision is made by the joint board of directors of SOCAR and the academy.
In addition, the company publishes its own scientific periodical, the Azerbaijan Oil Industry Journal, which has been in circulation since 1899. The journal is included in the list of publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission of Azerbaijan for the publication of dissertation research results and is distributed among SOCAR enterprises, scientific organisations, universities and international partners.
With the aim of developing innovative activities, SOCAR R&D and Innovation Inc. was established in 2019, specialising in scientific research and the implementation of technological developments. The company's research centre, located in Izmir (Turkey), includes six specialised laboratories and a pilot production area. The centre is implementing about 20 research projects for Petkim and STAR, with 25 scientists participating in its work. To date, the company owns 12 patents.
SOCAR is also actively involved in international research initiatives, including the European Union's Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programmes, which aim to promote innovation and reduce carbon emissions. The company has received approximately €1 million in funding from the European Commission for five international projects. In 2021, the total amount of grant support from Turkey and the EU was $2.7 million, and additional funds were raised for the implementation of innovative technological developments.
SOCAR's Department of Science, Technology and Nanotechnology cooperates with leading universities and research centres in Germany, Italy, Canada, Luxembourg, Iran and other countries. Within the framework of this cooperation, joint research is being carried out aimed at the development and application of modern nanomaterials and technologies for the oil industry.
The bulk of the company's research and development work is carried out by the Institute for Oil and Gas Research and Design, which was established in 2009 as a result of the reorganisation of SOCAR's structural divisions. The institute comprises 19 laboratories, 50 departments and other specialised units. As of 2024, it employs 2 corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, 9 doctors of science and 90 doctors of philosophy. Over the years of the institute's activity, more than 1,200 inventions have been registered, a significant part of which have been confirmed by patents and implemented in production practice.
ExxonMobil
In April 2025, the company released a report on research and development. The document states that the company's innovative activities are based on fundamental scientific research and engineering solutions. These areas form the basis for the creation and improvement of new technologies, which, after appropriate testing, can be implemented in industrial use if favourable regulatory conditions exist.
ExxonMobil invests in research aimed at creating innovative new-generation solutions focused on reducing the carbon footprint. The company employs thousands of scientists and engineers, including more than 1,500 with PhDs.
Since 2010, the company's scientists have produced more than 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific publications and obtained more than 10,000 patents. In addition, the company actively collaborates with more than 80 universities in various countries around the world, four energy research centres, and a number of national laboratories. In particular, over the past ten years, the company has invested approximately $100 million in joint research with national laboratories of the U.S. Department of Energy.
Career opportunities and professional growth
Research and publication activity in the oil and gas sector is an important element in shaping a specialist's professional trajectory. The presence of peer-reviewed publications, participation in grant programmes, international projects and the implementation of patented developments significantly increase an employee's expert status within the industry.
In modern oil and gas companies, research activities are increasingly being integrated into the strategic development system. Employees who are actively involved in scientific projects and publications have greater opportunities for:
- promotion to management and expert positions in R&D departments
- participation in international consortia and inter-industry projects
- involvement in strategic areas of the company's development (energy transition, decarbonisation, digitalisation of production)
- building a professional reputation and scientific authority
For young professionals, publishing often becomes a mechanism for professional self-realisation and a way to enter companies' research and development centres. In the context of global competition, it is scientific achievements, participation in grant initiatives and international programmes that increase a specialist's mobility and open up opportunities for work in international projects.
Thus, supporting research and publications not only contributes to the technological development of the enterprise, but also shapes long-term career prospects, creating an environment for professional growth, intellectual development, and increased competitiveness of personnel.
